Key differences between Caravan and Hardware Gas bottles;

Mounting & installation 

  • Caravan Gas Bottle
    Must be mounted in a dedicated LPG locker or external draw bar, vented to outside, and installed by a licensed gas fitter (or at least meet caravan/RV furniture & gas installation standards).

  • Hardware Gas Bottle 
    Often just a swap/exchange bottle or smaller cylinder for BBQ/camping. Generally used upright in open outdoor settings, possibly less stringent mounting.

Bottle type & size 

  • Caravan Gas Bottle
    Can include larger capacity (e.g., 9 kg, 4 kg) and sometimes “Grade 2” cylinders for caravan use, or specialised composite bottles to reduce weight.  
  • Hardware Gas Bottle 
    Typically, smaller/kits for BBQ or camping, e.g., 4 kg, 8.5 kg exchange bottles from Bunnings.  

 Valve/fitting type

  • Caravan Gas Bottle
    Often uses regulator, pigtail hose, correct fittings for caravan installation (e.g., 3/8″ SAE or 3/8″ BSP LH depending). Must meet RV/camper regulations.
  • Hardware Gas Bottle 
    The swap bottles may use standard valve types like LCC27 or bayonet style typical for domestic BBQ/portable use.

 Use‐case / appliance load 

  • Caravan Gas Bottle
    Designed to supply multiple appliances (fridge, water heater, cooktop) while travelling. Must be secure to road-vibration, etc.
  • Hardware Gas Bottle 
    Often just for a BBQ or camping stove, lighter duty, maybe less robust mounting/installation required.

 Safety & compliance

    Because movement, vibration, mounting on vehicle/trailer, must comply with vehicle & gas installation regulations (venting, mounting, securing etc).
